Overview

Harnessing the power of Castle Grayskull, the manufacturers of this floating desk globe have created a levitating world. Coincidentally, you too can harness this power by simply plugging your Magnetic Levitating Globe into a standard electrical outlet.

Powerful magnets at the top and bottom of the globe allow it to suspend gracefully in mid-air.

Magnetic Levitating Globe

The Stellanova floating desktop globe is an attractive levitating globe.

How the floating globe works

It's a simple premise: put magnets of opposite poles on the top and bottom of the globe. Their forces should cancel out and the globe will levitate. The theory is great except that it would require a globe that is perfectly spherical and with a completely uniform distribution of weight. Basically, this would require a magnetic levitating globe created by NASA engineers using $15,000 hammers.

The next logical step is to create magnets that can adjust their forces based upon changing conditions. For instance, if there's a little wind in the room that forces the globe in one direction or pushes it slightly up or down, the magnets could adjust their forces and keep everything balanced.

That's exactly what the Magnetic Levitating Globe does. In the top of the frame, there is a sensor that measures the magnetic field to measure the height at which the globe is suspended. In the bottom of the base, there is a microcomputer that adjusts an electronic magnet in the upper part of the frame in order to maintain suspension.

Yes, you can give the levitating globe a spin

The magnetic Levitating Globe is fairly robust in terms of maintaining its suspension. However, it's not suspended by invisible steel cables. It's floating. So, yes, you can give the floating globe small nudges with the tip of an eraser so that it rotates freely. But, you can't smack it with your hand and expect the globe to remain floating.

Add a magnetic floating globe to your desktop.
The Magnetic Levitating Globe makes a great addition to any desk.

Where can I buy this awesomeness?

Burning Questions: You Ask and We Answer

Burning Questions: You ask and we answer!
Your questions that have been answered by the Vat19.com staff:
when we lift all the product, we actually lift the weight of the 'stand only' or the weight of the globe and the stand?
If you attempt to lift the stand while the globe is floating, you will most likely cause the globe to fall.
do you have 110V?
Yes, the model that we carry is 110V. However, if you needed it to work in another country, many travel stores carry affordable adapters.
is this something that should be unplugged at the end of the day so it wont wear out or can you leave it plugged in 24 hours a day...
While it's probably best to unplug any electronics at the end of the day (to save on electricity and product lifespan), this product is no more likely to wear out than any other electronic item. You shouldn't have any problems leaving it plugged in 24 hours a day.
What is the consumption in watts drawn, while turned on of course? ;)
Unfortunately, the manufacturer does not know how many watts are consumed while the Levitating Globe is turned on. There are devices that you can buy that could measure this.
Is there a USB version, or will there be in the near future?
At this time, we're not aware of anyone that produces a USB-powered levitating globe, so no, we don't have plans to carry one in the near future.
Is this work in Zurich?
The Levitating Globe comes with a 110V brick adapter, which is standard in the United States. You should be able to purchase a power transformer from an electronics store or online retailer to convert it to the proper voltage to work in any country.
Does it work up-side down (Globe)?
The Levitating Globe would not be stable upside down.
I have one and I love it - but. it eventually and consistently wants to "spin" the globe in the wrong direction. Is it possible change something inside the base to make it spin in the correct direction?
This Levitating Globe doesn't rotate on its own, but you can manually give it a spin in the correct direction to get it started. If it is spinning in the wrong direction, this usually means the surface is uneven or a piece of iron, metal, a staple, or paperclip is nearby. Something nearby is giving it feedback and messing up the magnetic field. You can try unplugging the globe from the wall and base to reset it, and then wait about 20 minutes and try using it in a new location.
How do you guys get all this stuff?
We work with some incredible manufacturers!
Does globe light up?
No, the globe does not light up.
Are all countries labeled on the Levitating Globe? Is the country of Liechtenstein labeled?
Most countries are labeled but not all. Liechtenstein is not labeled.
How long does it last?
With proper use, the Stellanova should work for many years to come.
Could you take out the globe and put in something else?
No. The base is calibrated to work only with the included globe.
Can let's say a cat knock the globe of the maget when it is floating?
Yes, a cat could. It doesn't take an incredible amount of force to knock the globe over, but it has to be deliberate.
I have the Levitron Revolution. If I put the globe on the Levitron without the magnet provided with the Levitron, will it float?
The Levitron Revolution is only calibrated for the disc it comes with and will not Levitate other objects without it.
i live in austraila, do you need an adapter for the globe?
The Levitating Globe comes with a 110V brick adapter, which is standard in the United States. You should be able to purchase a power transformer from an electronics store or online retailer to convert it to the proper voltage to work in your country.
Can you float objects similar to the 'world'?
No, you would not be able to float standard, every day objects. The globe that comes with the stand is specially constructed with magnets on both poles that allow it to suspend in mid-air.
Q. What is the size of the globe?
The magnetic levitating globe is about 4 inches in diameter. The stand is approximately 12 inches tall.
Will it make an annoying loud noise when it drops onto the permanent magnetic base?
The globe will make a noise if it falls to the base.
When spinning, this globe gradually slows, but before it stops, it reverses direction of spin several times -just like when you twist on a swing in the playground. Why is that?
The Levitating Globe does not have an automatic rotation feature, so it won't spin on its own. External factors can affect the spin - if electromagnetic energy is being reflecting or another field interferes, it can change the direction of the rotation.
What is the output of the power adapter. I mean it takes the 110 from your wall and whats the output 9v? or 12?
The output is 18v.
Are there other planets that you can buy for this? -Martian 9110223X
We're sorry, but Earth is the only planet that we offer for the Levitating Globe. This is not intended as a slight against Martians, and should be interpreted only as a reflection of current consumer demand.
In my country the standard is 220v so I wonder will the product function normally or I'll have to buy an adapter for it.
This globe is 110V so you would need an adapter.
The globe seems to spin indefinitely. Is this due to lack of friction, or do the magnets apply some torque to the globe to keep it going?
The Levitating Globe will eventually slow down. To the best of our knowledge, the magnets are not applying any force to keep the globe spinning. The lack of friction is what allows a small spinning force to keep the globe moving for long periods of time.
What is the globe's diameter?
The magnetic levitating globe's diameter is approximately 4 inches.
I love my globe (which is several yrs. old), but it no longer "levitates" ( only is pulled to stick to the magnet at the top). Is buying a new one my only option?
Purchasing a new one would be your only option as there is no way to repair the electromagnet in either the base or the top of the device.
Didn't I see this product in the Smurf movie?
You sure did! Stellanova did in fact make an appearance in the Smurf movie.
what is the size of the actual globe itself?
The globe is 4" in diameter.
Would this be a good gift for my History teacher? Would the students knock it off her desk?
The Stellanova would be a great present for a teacher! I'm sure that your teacher would keep it in a safe place.
Is the globe made out of plastic, glass, or some special materials that vat19 has yet to make known to the world?
The globe is plastic.
So...is there a magnet on the top that makes the globe float? Or the Bottom
The Levitating Globe has magnets on the top and bottom which provide the repelling force.
I don't know if we have your exact product, but when we remove the stick to separate the top magnet and the globe it doesn't float, but sticks to the top. How do I fix this?
The manufacturer said to try getting the globe to float without using the spacer, as some people can get it to float much easier without it. Don't let it stick to the top magnet and gradually adjust the distance between the globe and the top magnet until you feel that magnetic "sweet spot".
WHOA! How the heck does that work!?! I watched the video but i'm still in confusion!
There's a sensor in the top that measures the magnetic field and there's a microcomputer in the base that adjusts an electronic magnet in the upper part of the frame to keep the globe suspended.
what is the power used for 12in globe? 18v/300ma?
Yes, it is 18v / 300 mA.
Do you have 10" diameter? Do you offer version with political maps (with country, states, and cities)
Unfortunately, the levitating globe you see here is the only variety we offer.
What happens, exactly, when if it's unplugged by means of a toddler tripping on the cord or the power grid browning out?
The globe will fall. Depending on how it falls, it might stick to base.
This must be one of the most awesomest globe i ever sean cant think of a better one ! Good work !
Thanks!
can I purchase the adapter?
The adapter is not sold separately.
Instead of having to unplug it when not in use, is there an Off-On switch on the cord?
The Levitating Glove does not have an on/off switch.
I have lost the AC adapter can I get another one?
Sorry, but we do not sell the AC adapter separately. The Levitating Globe uses a standard 110V brick adapter, so you may be able to find a replacement at your local electronics store.
can i paint mine to look like a basketball?
We have not painted a Levitating Globe, but we consulted with our manufacturer and we both don't think there would be a problem if you painted the globe.
We have an F-117 Stealth Bomber that can be suspended in a similar manner. Can we replace the globe with the stealth bomber ?
The base was designed specifically for the globe, and since we do not have one to test, we cannot say whether or not your Stealth Bomber will work.
Hi, I this a current world map?
Based on what we can see, it appears to be current.
I broke the electromagnet on top, and glued it back on , however it will not levitate now. Any solutions???
These devices need to be finely balanced to work. I'm afraid that if you broke and reattached the magnet, it may have done irreparable damage.
Could you possibly make the Globe in Green or any other colors that would be awesome if not you should try
We don't have any plans to change the globe color; sorry!
I bought the globe and I lost the AC adapter. Do you sell them? If so, $? If not do you know what the volts, amp etc are? Thanks
We do not sell the AC adapter separately. It is 110V.
Does the stand only come in the C shape or can you order it in another style?
That is currently the only shape that the base is available in.
If i were to put this in high wind, would it rotate faster?
We think strong winds would knock the globe out of position and possibly knock the base over, too.
Have you got the brown & gold model? how much is the delivery to Brazil? Thank's,
Vat19 only sells the silver and blue model of the Levitating Globe. To calculate shipping costs, click the "Get Shipping Quote" link near the top of the page or add the item to the shopping cart to get a shipping estimate.
What Voltage do i use to power it if i loose the cord
The magnetic levitating globe uses an 18v 300mA cord.
Can you Show mathematically how the magnetic fields cancel in the center of the globe? Preferably by Amperes or Gauss's law?
Vat19 is in the business of selling curiously awesome gifts, not doing your homework. We hope you can understand.
There are only magnets inside the globe itself? No magnets in the top or bottom part of the stand? Just sensors?
The Levitating Globe has magnets inside the globe itself and at the top and bottom of the stand.
is it safe to keep this product within 12" of a hard disk drive?
We suspect that it would be OK to use a levitating globe roughly 12" from a hard disk drive, but we have not tested it.
Does it have a 220v adapter? (European standard)
No, it is a 110V brick adapter. There are many retail stores and online shops where you can purchase a power transformer to convert 110V to 220V.
I would like to levitate something heavier and taller than the curent globe. Is it possible to order a stronger, taller stand so that I can experiment with other floating objects?
The Levitating Globe stand that you see here on this page is the only magnetic stand sold by Vat19.
How could you increase the weight of the globe without disrupting the magnetic field?
It may be possible to increase the Levitating Globe's weight a bit, but we suspect that any large increase to the weight would make it too heavy for the current configuration.
Do you ship these globe to vietnam?
Yes. Just use the "Get Shipping Quote" button near the top of the page to get a precise and current quote for your location.
What material is the globe made out of?
The globe is made out of plastic.
I lost my cord where could I get another?
We do not sell the power cord for the Levitating Globe separately. You could try an electronics shop as they may carry a universal AC adapter that would work.
Do you need batteries?
The Levitating Globe does not take batteries. It uses very little power, but it needs very consistent power, which you can only get with an AC adapter.
What does the globe weigh?
The entire box for the Levitating Globe weighs approximately 2 lbs (this includes the arm and AC adapter). The globe itself weighs about 4-6 ounces.
Neat, and I will probably buy one. It would've been a slam dunk had you tilted the axis... Now I havta look at your other products!
Thanks for the feedback.
if you spin it while its floating, approx, how long will it spin?
We can't accurately say how long the globe will spin. However, because the only force slowing down the spin is air friction, you are assured of a very long spin.
Can anything else be suspended or is it limited to the globe?
Only the globe can be suspended in the Levitating Globe. The globe has magnets on the top and bottom which provide the repelling force.
Is it safe to put that thing near a computer monitor? I know that magnets can cause discoloration in displays and I've got a spot on my desk that would be perfect for this thing.
We had one sitting about 12 inches from a monitor for several days and there were no problems. We don't recommend getting much closer than that, however. If you were to experience a problem caused by magnets, many monitors have a DeGaussing function designed to fix the issue. LCD or Flat Panel monitors are not affected by the magnets at all.
How do you you get the globe to float instead of sticking to the top or bottom of the globe? Ist there a trick to this?
Getting the magnetic levitating globe to float can be a little tricky at first. If you look inside the instruction manual, you'll find a couple of paper guides that can help you position it until you get the hang of it.
Is there a model that you can plug into a USB port?
While a USB Magnetic Levitating Globe might exist somewhere, we don't know where.
How hard does the globe hit the base when/if it falls?
We don't know an exact speed or measurement of impact. However, in our tests, when we intentionally made the Levitating Globe fall, the globe and base were not damaged.
If I order more than just one globe, for example one hundred, would the the price will be the same?
We do offer bulk order discounts. For more information, please call us at 1-800-476-1991.
