Look, ma! No hands!
The Self-Balancing Unicycle is a fully-powered vehicle that zips along at a speedy 12 and a half miles per hour. With a rechargeable electric motor and gyro stabilized pitch control, riding the SBU is much easier than an ordinary unicycle and tons of fun.
Ride along without pedaling as the SBU balances for you. Meanwhile, spread your free hands to enjoy that “king of the world” feeling or just hold them out for high fives when passers-by see how awesome you are.
Get your lean on
Short of cybernetic implants, you’ll never feel as one with a machine as you will with the Self-Balancing Unicycle.
After mounting, lean forward, and the machine responds by moving forward. The farther you lean forward, the faster the SBU rolls. To slow down, lean back and the regenerative electronic motor brake throttles back your speed. With acceleration taken care of by the machine, you can use your own balance to steer left and right.
Built for work and play
While it’s certainly a unique machine, the SBU is not built as a cheapo novelty gag.
Assembled with powder coated aluminum, the unicycle is made to last. The rechargeable battery can carry a rider weighing over 300 pounds up to 10 miles on a single charge. And speeding along at bicycle-like speeds is a real rush.
Zip past that traffic jam
There’s no questioning that taking the SBU for a spin is fun. But it’s also a practical tool to get you from A to B with minimal hassle.
The mountain bike-style tire handles multiple terrain types, so you can safely glide past congested traffic before riding up a curb onto the sidewalk. When you push the SBU to its limit, the onboard computer automatically pushes back to keep you safely atop the seat while a regenerative brake recovers some of the energy lost in decelerating. And once you have reached your destination, the foot stands fold up for maximum portability.
Frequently Asked Questions
Question: It seems hard to ride. Is it dangerous?
Answer: Just like riding a bike, there is a learning curve, but it’s not something only circus clowns can master. We’ve found that most ordinary people can competently ride in an afternoon if they already have good enough balance to ride a bicycle. We recommend taking it slow in an open parking lot and getting the hang of it before leaning all the way forward and opening up to top speed.
Question: Isn’t this for nerds?
Answer: Absolutely. It’s also for anyone else who likes fun outdoor recreation and cool gadgets. If accelerating from 0-10 mph in 3 seconds with mere inches between your feet and the ground and nothing but the wind and open road in front of you is for nerds, call us Poindexter.
Question: Does the SBU balance in every direction? Can I fall off of it?
Answer: As a rider-assist vehicle, the Self-Balancing Unicycle only automatically balances in the forward-backward direction. You work in tandem with the SBU to accelerate and brake while you use your natural sense of balance to turn left and right by leaning. While it’s possible to fall forward if you stubbornly push the SBU beyond its limits, the onboard computer is designed to automatically lean back if you’re travelling too fast.
Question: What are the range and speed of the SBU?
Answer: The range depends on the grade of the terrain and weight of the rider, but under average conditions, the SBU tops out at 12.5 mph and can travel up to 10 miles on a single charge. The SBU is rated to climb grades of up to 30%.
Question: Tell me about the battery.
Answer: That’s not a question. But the rechargeable battery, included with the SBU, plugs into a standard wall outlet with an AC charger and fully charges in 1-2 hours. The battery is rated for 1000 complete charge cycles. If you’re out for a ride and the battery is fully depleted, the SBU is designed to safely lean back and come to a complete stop.
Question: How do I download that sweet song from the video?
Answer: You can get it for free right here. You can also get the song on iTunes as well as some other streaming music services.
